Authentic South Indian cuisine London

The "Udaya Kerala Restaurant" in London is a true gem for lovers of South Indian cuisine, especially traditional dishes from Kerala. Since its opening in September 1999, the restaurant has established itself as one of the top destinations for authentic Keralan culinary in the capital. It is run by a family whose passion for the flavors of their homeland is evident in every detail. The chefs, who come directly from Kerala, not only bring their skills but also the soul of this South Indian region - a cuisine known for its diversity, spices, and use of coconut. Udaya aims to provide its guests with an experience that goes beyond just food, and places great importance on making every visitor feel especially welcome.

Traditional dishes from Kerala

The menu is a celebration of Keralan traditions, with many dishes considered pioneering elements in the UK as they were previously hard to find here. A definite highlight is the "Porotta", a layered flatbread celebrated for its lightness and unparalleled taste - many guests rave about not finding a comparable quality anywhere else in England. Accompanying it is the "Kerala Chicken Curry", a simple but deep dish with tender chicken in a spicy, coconut-based sauce that captures the authentic taste of home. For seafood lovers, the "Fish Pollichathu" is a must-try - a whole fish marinated in a rich spice mix, wrapped in banana leaves, and grilled, giving it a smoky, intense flavor. The "Pothichoru", a traditional dish served wrapped in banana leaves, evokes nostalgic memories of Kerala and is often highlighted as a special experience. Vegetarians will enjoy the "Vegetable Kurma", a creamy curry that combines vegetables with subtle spices.

Best restaurants for Keralan food

The ambience of the Udaya Kerala Restaurant is simple yet inviting, with a focus on functionality rather than extravagant luxury. The decor is colorful and vibrant, with hand-painted murals depicting scenes from Kerala, as well as photos capturing the cultural depth of the state. There is space for over 80 guests, and a separate party room is available for private celebrations such as birthdays or anniversaries, making the restaurant attractive for larger groups as well. The atmosphere is lively, especially on weekends or on special occasions like the Onam festival, when traditional specialties are served. Yet the space remains cozy and familial, reinforcing the impression of being a guest in a home away from home.

Family-run South Indian restaurant London

The service is another plus, although it may vary depending on the crowd. The staff is friendly and eager to introduce guests to the dishes, often with recommendations or explanations of the specialties. However, on busy days there may be some waiting times, which some visitors may consider a minor flaw - a sign of the restaurant's popularity. The food is freshly prepared without a microwave, emphasizing quality even if it requires some patience at times. The restaurant also offers catering services for off-site events, showcasing its versatility.

Memorable hospitality in restaurant

Udaya places great importance on authenticity and community. It uses fresh ingredients and avoids modern shortcuts to preserve the traditional taste. The restaurant has also left a social footprint, such as donating hundreds of meals to NHS workers during the pandemic or participating in cultural festivals of the Malayalee community in London. The drink selection is rather simple, with classics like "Mango Lassi" or traditional tea complementing the dishes perfectly, while alcohol is also offered.

I have visited this restaurant several times in the last couple months. I absolutely recommend it. So good! Over my visits, I've tried the fish cutlet, omelette, barotta, chicken curry, egg chilli, kerala tea, ginger tea, and the special nadan fry. Everything I tried here was really tasty, especially the Kerala specials. Now while this restaurant serves mainly southern Indian cuisine - specifically Malayali, with highlights being options like the Kerala chicken curry and the Malabar paratha - there are plenty options here to cater to all. The customer service here is excellent. The diner's every need is attended to, and every question is answered. The atmosphere is well set by the cultural wall art and dimmed lighting. It's a warm place, a nice place to chill, and also a good dinner setting.
